Are you a new resident in Korea and feeling overwhelmed by the bustling public transportation system? Let’s talk more about the Tmoney card for residents and what you need as someone who lives in South Korea! In this simple guide, we walk you through what you need to know about this handy little card, from where to buy it to how to use it for multiple people. Let’s dive in!

Defining the Information Lens for this Article

As a legal resident in South Korea, adapting to daily life involves mastering public transportation and its payment systems such as transportation cards. Such cards play a pivotal role in navigating the city efficiently and reducing culture shock and stress.

Unlike tourists who primarily use transportation cards for short-term travel, legal residents of Korea utilize transportation extensively for commuting to work, school, running errands, convenience stores, public pay phones, parking garages, and more. That’s right, transportation cards not only simplify access to buses, subways, and trains but also may extend their convenience to various retail outlets, making them a versatile tool for various everyday transactions.

Integrating transportation cards into daily routines enhances the efficiency and ease of living in South Korea, showcasing its practicality beyond mere transportation needs. Additionally, legal residents living in South Korea need to know additional information not often included in blog posts and articles written in English for visiting tourists. Therefore, the following blog post focuses on the International Resident Lens of life lived in South Korea.

cashbee is more common outside Seoul.

About Transportantion Cards (교통 카드)

A transportation card (교통 카드) in Korea, such as the T-money card, is a convenient smart card that allows users to pay for various modes of public transportation seamlessly. It eliminates the need for carrying cash or purchasing individual tickets, making commuting faster and easier.

Different companies offer different Transporation Cards with different benefits. Besides the T-Money card, other popular options include the Cashbee card, Hanpay card, and the recently introduced Zero Pay card, each offering similar functionalities with minor variations in features and benefits. Such cards are widely accepted across subways, city buses, inter-city buses, taxis, and even some convenience stores, providing commuters with a hassle-free way to navigate Korea’s bustling transportation network. Sometimes you can also use them in parking garages to pay for parking fees.

What is a Tmoney Card?

The Tmoney card is one of the most popular transportation cards, especially for the Seoul Subway lines. Think of it as your all-access pass to most public transportation systems across Korea. Whether you’re hopping on the subway, catching a city bus, inter-city bus, or even taking a taxi, this card has you covered. It’s a reloadable smart card that allows you to conveniently pay for your fares without the hassle of carrying cash or buying individual tickets.

For the sake of SEO and to make sure this blog post shows up on Google Search, we are using the term Tmoney to represent the concept of the Transportation Card. We need to do this since most people have only heard of Tmoney and don’t realize that Tmoney is just one type of transportation card in South Korea. When reading the following information, understand that many of the same concepts apply to other cards like CashBee. Different areas of Korea beyond Seoul may even prefer Cashbee.

Reasons to Purchase a Tmoney Card

Convenience exists as the biggest reason to have a Tmoney card – no more fumbling for cash or hunting down exact change every time you hop on a bus or subway. With a Tmoney card in your pocket, you can breeze through turnstiles and onto buses with just a quick tap.

Plus, it’s not just for transportation – you can also use your Tmoney card to pay for snacks at convenience stores or even your morning coffee at select restaurants and cafes such as Starbucks, McDonald’s, Angel-in-Us Coffee, Ediya Coffee, Gong Cha Tea, and Paris Baguette and more. Just check their payment options to see if Tmoney is accepted

Where Can You Buy a Tmoney Card?

Now that you know what a Tmoney card is, you’re probably wondering where you can buy one. Well, you’re in luck, they sell them all over Korea! There are two main options for purchasing a T-Money card:

  1. In-Person: You can head to any convenience store in Korea, such as GS25, CU, or 7-Eleven, and pick up a T-Money card right at the counter. Just ask the cashier, and they’ll hook you up in no time.
  2. Online: You can also buy T-Money Cards through shopping sites like Coupang,
  3. App: If you prefer a more tech-savvy approach, you can download the T-Money app on your smartphone and get a virtual card delivered straight to your device. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for those who prefer to keep things digital. (The one drawback to only having a virtual card is sometimes your phone dies and you don’t have a charger.)

Purchasing a Tmoney Card

When you buy a Tmoney card it may range in price between 3,000-15,000 KRW. The basic cards from corner marts usually cost around 3,000 KRW but you can get fancy or customized versions for more. It just depends on how cute you want your card to be. No difference in functionality. You can even get character keychains that function as Tmoney cards.

@priscillakwon Replying to @tannie7 i got mine from storyway!! #koreanconveniencestore ♬ original sound – priscilla kwon

Remember that the Tmoney Cards do not come with money pre-loaded. After paying for the card, you will need to take the next step and add money to your card in order to pay for the transportation.

Adding Money to the Tmoney Card

Korean Won Cash is required to charge your Tmoney/Transportation Card. You can only add money to your Tmoney Card using cash or online payment through a Korean Bank Account via the app. Since you are likely reading this article because you are new in Korea, cash will be the option you use when you get started.

Visit a Convenience Store

Take your T-Money Card and KRW cash to the nearest GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, MINISTOP, Story Way, Emart24, or 365PLUS. The clerk will be able to accept your cash and charge your card.

Subway Station Kiosk

You can also use cash to add money to your card at various Top-up machines including One-time ticket issuers, Tmoney vending machines, and portable reload machines. In My Korea has a great tutorial on purchasing T-Money Cards from kiosks.

Register Your T-Money Card

Do not skip this step if you can help it. Registering your Tmoney card with the Tmoney app protects you. This step is super easy and comes with some great perks. By registering your card, you’ll be able to track your usage history, manage your balance, and even get refunds if you lose your card. It’s a simple way to keep tabs on your transportation expenses and ensure that your card is always protected.

In conclusion, the Tmoney card is a must-have for anyone living or traveling in Korea. With its convenience, versatility, and all-around awesomeness, it’s the perfect companion for navigating the bustling streets of this vibrant country. So what are you waiting for? Go grab your T-Money card today and start exploring everything that Korea has to offer!

Add to that the ability to track your spending and usage history online, along with the peace of mind of having a registered card in case of loss or theft, and it’s clear why getting a T-Money card is a no-brainer for anyone living or traveling in Korea.

Using the Tmoney Card on a Bus

When getting on a City Bus you will need to tap your Tmoney Card when you enter and exit the bus. If you do this, you get a 100 KRW discount. Tmoney cardholders get up to four discounts a day when they transfer within a transfer time limit of 30 minutes.

Multi-person Bus Rides

When you ride a bus, you can use a Tmoney card to pay for multiple people. To do this, tell the bus driver the number of people you will be paying for with your transportation card before you use the reader. This may require sign language with the bus driver rather than the Papago app since you need to keep moving quickly.

You can’t pay for multiple people with a Tmoney Card when riding the subway.

T-Money and Kids

Parents in Korea love Tmoney Cards for their kids. It’s part of the social safety net that allows kids to easily move around their area. The kids always have what they need to catch a bus, subway, or taxi where they need to go. Additionally, the card can pay for snacks or dinner at convenience stores or at spots like Starbucks, McDonald’s, Angel-in-Us Coffee, Ediya Coffee, Gong Cha Tea, Paris Baguette and more.

Discounts are available for :

  • Children: Age 6 to 12
  • Youth: Age 13 to 18

Kids Specific Cards

You can purchase special T-Money cards designed specifically for kids. These cards are perfect for your little ones to use when they’re out and about. You can set spending limits and track spending on the cards. Teach your kids about responsibility while giving them the freedom to explore. You will need to register the child with their birthday (FRC Card will be needed) at your local GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, MINISTOP, Story Way, Emart24, or 365PLUS.

Standard T-Money Cards Adjusted for Kids Rate

If you already have a regular Tmoney card for your child, that’s ok. Take your child with their FRC card (to verify their birthday) and visit a convenience store or a Tmoney Public Service Center at train stations. They can adjust the card rate for you.

Refunds

You can get a refund for the amount on your Tmoney card but not the cost of the card itself. So if you have 7,000 KRW loaded on your card, you can get a refund at the same locations where you can fill your card which includes: GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, MINISTOP, Story Way, Emart24, or 365PLUS.

Using a Credit Card or Bank Card as a Transportation Card

If you have a Korean Bank account, you can often have the bank attach a Transportation Card account to your Debit or Credit Cards. When you do this, you can simply tap the Korean Debit or Credit Card of your choice on the payment pad as if it’s a Tmoney Card.

If you are a resident of South Korea, we HIGHLY recommend using your Bank Card as a transportation card. It means you don’t have to worry about charging your card – assuming you have set up the Transportation Fee account correctly to either always have money in the account or to charge the fees at the end of the month.

Payment Options for Transporation Cards Attached to Bank Accounts

When setting up your Transportation Account with your bank, there are often three options for funding your account. Keep in mind, we created the names for these options in English as explanations and not as official terms:

  1. Deposit Monthly Funds: A predetermined amount of money is added to the Transporation Card Account every month. This allows you to carefully control your transportation budget. For example, you add 50,000 KRW a month, and whatever isn’t used rolls over to the next month. The drawback: Such an option means you may run out of money and need to manually refill the account by visiting the bank or using your bank app.
  2. Draw on Account: A funded Transportation Account has a minimum amount limit. You start by adding a certain amount to your account (Example: 50,000 KRW) and when the account hits a limit you select (Example: 10,000 KRW) they draw a pre-determined amount from your account (Example: Add 30,000 KRW) so that you always have money in your account for transportation.
  3. Monthly Draw: Monthly Transportation Card expenses are tracked in a “credit” style Transportation Account and deducted once a month from your bank account. This option is usually associated with a bank Credit Card. A Monthly Draw exists as the easiest system for managing transportation costs but may not be an option for those without a Korean Credit Card.

Warning About Unregistered Tmoney Cards

If you do not register your Tmoney hard be very careful because your money is not protected. It’s shockingly easy to lose or damage your card. When that happens (not if) and your card is not registered online, all the money you loaded on that card will be gone. If you can’t register your Tmoney card online, we recommend loading only 10,000 KRW on the card at any given time. They OFTEN become unreadable due to regular use.

Pyeongtaek Living 101

Did you know that Pyeongtaek City offers Parking Ticket Alerts via text message for some parking violations? If you register for the Parking Ticket Alerts, you will get a text message (in Korean) from the Pyeongtaek Parking Authority saying something to the effect of, “Move your care in the next (number of minutes) to avoid a ticket.” Keep reading to learn more.

Notifications for Certain Infractions

The Parking Ticket Alerts occur for certain types of parking issues such as parking on sidewalks, or intersections.

Register on the Pyeongtaek City Government Website

Registration for Parking Alerts is handled online through the Pyeongtaek City Hall website. The link for registering for Parking Ticket Alerts may change over time. The city may change the government websites after elections or a change in city budgeting. As of 2024, you can register via the following link: https://www.pyeongtaek.go.kr/parkingsms/application/join.do

Only The Car Owner Can Register

Please note that only the owner of the car can receive parking alerts. Therefore, the phone number you use to register for alerts must be the same phone number used to register the car. You can learn more about Korea’s resident identity verification system here.

Getting Registered For Alerts

It’s quick and easy to register for alerts if your name and information match throughout Korea’s identity registration system. However, if you don’t speak Korean it might take a little while to translate and read each step so give yourself some time. When we completed the process it went like this:

Step 1: Agree to Service

You will need to agree to the terms of service. Agree by clicking 동의합니. Once you have accepted all of the terms you will be moved to the next step.

Step 2: Complete the Online Form

The online form on the Pyeongtaek City Government website will ask you for 3 things:

  • license plate number
  • owner’s name as written to match their FRC
  • Korean smartphone number

The following images show the form and how we completed the form for our vehicle.

Step 3: Verify Your Identity

Once you submit the above form you may be asked for a verification number. Remember that all of this will occur with Korean prompts. When we did it, we took screenshots and translated them with Papago to understand each step of the process.

Congratulations, once you complete this process you will get alerts to move your vehicle if it’s illegally parked near many CCTV cameras.

Pyeongtaek-si is outlined in blue.

Over the last decade, Pyeongtaek-si quickly developed from a rural farming area to a key player in modern Korea’s economic development. The development of massive Samsung factories and the relocation of many US military personnel to the area brought many changes. As of 2021, Pyeongtaek-si feels like a mix of city and countryside life mixed into one

South of Seoul

Thinking about joining Pyeongtaek Living 101 but want to know more about the program? Here is a recap of the first course in Paengseong, Pyeongtaek. TLD;R It’s been a lot of fun and a lot of information.

About Pyeongtaek Living 101

First, let’s introduce the FREE Pyeongtaek Living 101 course since you may not know what it is. The Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course is a program hosted by the International Exchange Foundation (PIEF) and funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Pyeongtaek City Government.

The Pyeongtaek Living 101 program has operated for 3 years. The goal of the program is to help international residents, especially US military-affiliated people, live more comfortably in Pyeongtaek. This means the class seeks to empower attendees with tools, information, and ideas for living their best lives.

In 2024, South of Seoul joined the effort and helped to create the curriculum for the 2024 Pyeongtaek Living 101 Courses. It’s PIEF’s goal to have information specifically focused on the Pyeongtaek area and this is our volunteer’s specialty. We feel honored to help with this effort and support our community more completely than just through blogs and social media. We all feel invested in making sure it’s the best program of its kind.

The content of the course includes a deep dive into topics that impact living a comfortable life in Pyeongtaek. Topics include how to use Naver to learn more about Pyeongtaek, navigate parking, Foreign Registration Cards, sourcing information through Naver, and common culture shock struggles. Actually, the list is so long it’s hard to fit here. So far, the class has covered the topics of Residency and Navigating Pyeongtaek-si

The Class Vibes in 2024

The Paengseong Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course attendees have been wonderful and very involved. Each week they bring their questions and take lots of notes. They’ve also been bringing their experiences to the table to help each other learn. Their interest in learning more about the local area has kept us all on our toes as we strive to provide specific and helpful solutions and tools.

Also, the good vibes grow each week as the puzzle pieces come together. As everyone gets more comfortable with the information and sees how it can impact their lives, they get more animated and excited. It’s fun to watch each person have ah-ha moments as they learn information that meets individual needs.

Workshopping

One of the best parts of each class has to be the time spent workshopping. Since the Pyeontaek Living 101 Course offers very localized and practical content, we also strive to make such content feel fully accessible and that means hands-on work. Attendees spend time workshopping:

  • How to use Naver
  • Tricks for finding information even if you don’t speak Korean
  • The best ways to leverage Papago and Naver translate
  • Solutions for finding help when help is needed

Last week the 101-2: Pyeongtaek-si class ran long since attendees needed additional support in learning how to use tools. For example, attendees wanted to know how to:

  • Set Naver to a gas/ car type for accurate toll costs
  • Send a Naver pin
  • Change languages
  • View bike paths and hiking trails
  • Search for things using Korea (via Papago)

We don’t mind these delays because all the attendees need to fully understand the tools they use to live their best lives.

Learning to send a location pin in Naver

The Local Snacks

Our courses, it’s not all work. We also have some fun. For example, each week we introduce different foods that can be found around Pyeongtaek. During the 101-1: Residency Class attendees sampled different flavors of kimpbap including:

  • Bulgogi
  • Shrimp
  • Pork cutlet
  • Galbi
  • Traditional

It’s not often attendees get to try some of these more unique kimbap flavors and it opened their eyes to a whole new world of possibilities.

The pork cutlet kimbap was a big favorite

During the 101-2: Pyeongtaek-si classes students sampled different flavors of South African meat pies and the sausage rolls from Biltong Box. It’s our goal to introduce all aspects of the wider Pyeongtaek-si community which includes cultural diversity. In Pyeongtaek we are lucky to have access to food from all over the world in one small community.

Biltong Box Catering

The Childcare

The kids have been having a wonderful time. While parents study, the kids attending the Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course can choose to learn along with their families or play together with attending staff. Kids have been enjoying their own snack time, coloring books, games, and each other’s company.

Please note that we don’t like to share kids in our information so we haven’t shared many images. We have around 7-10 kids coming each week. It’s been great to provide parents with this type of support.

Lanae Rivers-Woods, MAIT

Welcome, book lovers and South of Seoul community! This month, our book club dives into “Nuclear Family” by Joseph Han. It’s a novel that explores the life of a Korean American family caught in the throes of personal and political turmoil. Han’s unique narrative style blends realism with a touch of the surreal, making “Nuclear Family” a must-read for those who appreciate depth and innovation in storytelling.

About the South of Seoul Book Club

If you are familiar with the series, skip ahead to learn more about “Almond: A Novel.”

Looking for book recommendations? Welcome to the South of Seoul book club. We recommend a book every month. Such recommended books explore topics like 1) South Korean history or culture, 2) the complexity of cross-cultural life, 4) the exploration of life within the diaspora experience, and 5) lenses on Korean culture around the world.

Commitment to Accessibility

South of Seoul volunteers take book accessibility into consideration when recommending titles. We consider:

  • Purchasable in English In Korea: Many translated titles can’t actually be purchased in English in Korea,
  • Audio Version Available: Many people find audiobooks easier to consume.
  • Online Versions.: International residents can’t afford to travel with many books. Also, many books may not be available in digital form from within Korea.

Commitment to Diverse Lived Experiences

South of Seoul volunteers seek to put lived experiences at the forefront of their recommendations. When considering authors we look for such things as:

  • Korean authors who write based on their lived experiences in Korea.
  • International residents who write based on their lived experiences in South Korea.
  • Ethnic Koreans who write based on their lived experience in other countries.

Reading about Korean culture from a variety of perspectives may provide readers with a greater understanding of the country and culture.

Commitment to Supporting Mental Health

South of Seoul also includes book recommendations that support the lives and mental health of our community. This means that books may tackle the issues of relationships and more.

Book Recommendation By Lanae Rivers-Woods

May’s recommendation is brought to you by South of Seoul founder, Lanae Rivers-Woods. Rivers-Woods founded South of Seoul in 2015 and has lived in South Korea since 2011. She launched the South of Seoul Book Club in 2022 when volunteers suggested creating a reading list for those who just moved to Korea.

About The Author of “Nuclear Family”

Joseph Han is a novelist and educator. He was born and raised in Hawaii. His work often explores themes of identity and displacement. Han’s debut novel, “Nuclear Family,” received critical acclaim for its innovative narrative style. He holds a Ph.D. in English from the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. Currently, Han teaches writing at the University of Portland. His stories challenge readers to think deeply about cultural and personal intersections.

My Experience Reading “Nuclear Family”

“Nuclear Family” was recommended by one of our long-time volunteers at South of Seoul, LeaDan. LeaDan is from Hawai’i and lived in South Korea for many years. I’m hesitant to read books about places where I have lived or have a community. My closeness to the topic makes it hard to relax into the story. Basically, an author’s lack of knowledge about the location or culture puts me off. However, since LeaDan has a respectful relationship with Hawai’i and Korea, I trusted her and made reading “Nuclear Family” a priority.

For me, “the book “Nuclear Family” feels deeply, and authentically rooted in both Hawai’i and Korea. As mentioned in past book reviews, I don’t research an author’s history until I have read at least one of their books. However, while reading I could tell Joseph Han lived in Hawai’i and had a close relationship with Korea. His attention to detail created a foundation for a story filled with magical realism that still feels grounded.

Additionally, the female characters felt well-rounded and I wasn’t always thinking, “A man wrote her.” Sometimes female characters are like cartoons, but his characters feel like actual people no matter their gender.

It’s been a while since I read this book, and I find it sticks with me. A few times a week, the characters find their way into my reality. For me, that’s what a good book is. It’s a book that becomes part of my memories and my framework for considering reality around me. It’s hard for me to put into words what the book will mean to others. It’s a story that feels both surreal and strangely truth.

More Commentary And Reviews On “Nuclear Family”

The above review contains my thoughts and opinions. However, make sure to read other reviews to have a more rounded perspective toward the book. We all come to each story with our own social/cultural lens. Therefore, others may have perceived this book in a different manner and may help you decide if this is the book for you.

About the 2024 Pyeongtaek Living 101 Curriculum

PIEF consulted with our South of Seoul volunteers to develop the 2024 Pyeongtaek Living 101 Course Curriculum. PIEF worked with our group to identify specific concerns related to the international community in the Pyeongtaek area. Our volunteers based their curriculum-related advice on over a decade of research conducted through our community programs and community Facebook groups.

April’s Book Club Pick, “Almond: A Novel,” is a coming of age story about Yunjae, a young boy with Alexithymia, who struggles to feel pain, anger, and empathy. Hugely popular among BTS fans, as RM, J-Hope, and Suga read it in 2020 in their reality show “BTS In the Soop.” So, let’s dig into this story focusing on themes of acceptance, love, and human connection.

South of Seoul volunteers seek to put lived experiences at the forefront of their recommendation choices.

This means that books may tackle the issues relationships, and more.

Book Recommendation By Melissa Edwards-Whittington

About The Author of “Almond: A Novel”

The author of “Almond: A Novel” is Sohn Won-Pyung, a South Korean author, screenwriter, and filmmaker. Born in Seoul in 1979, she earned her Bachelor of Arts in social studies and philosophy at Sogang University and in film directing at Korean Academy of Film Arts.

“Almond: A Novel,” her debut full-length novel, won the Changbi Prize for Young Adult Fiction in 2016. Also, in 2020, she won the Japanese Booksellers’ Award in translated fiction for the same work. In addition, she wrote and directed the Korean film, “Intruder” (침입자) in 2020.

Interview with Writer Sohn Won-Pyung

Almond To Be Made Into A Musical

almond: a novel

My Experience Reading “Almond: A Novel”

The prologue puts it best, “I won’t tell you whether it has a happy ending or a tragic ending…neither you nor I nor anyone can ever really know whether a story is happy or tragic.” The story is about protagonist Yunjae, who suffers from alexithymia. Because of this disorder, part of his brain that controls feelings never fully formed, so he can’t feel any emotions. Due to this particular part of the brain being shaped like almonds, the author chose to use it for the name of the book.

Often labeled as a “monster” by his classmates, he struggles to understand why people feel that way. However, his grandmother and mother try to help Yunjae learn to manage and deal with his disorder in a world that does not understand him. They leave little post-it notes with reminders to smile, laugh, or say thank you.

Unfortunately, tragedy strikes when he is 16 when Yunjae’s mother and grandmother die. Therefore, he struggles and then, befriends the landlord of his family’s bookstore, Dr. Shim. Eventually, he meets fellow students, Gon and Dora. Through the relationships he builds with Dr. Shim, Gon, and Dora, he grows as a person and perseveres in spite of his condition. Although filled with moments of happiness and sadness, the story leaves you with a lot of meaningful life lessons.

We all come to each story with our own social/cultural lens. Therefore, others may have perceived this book in a different manner and may help you decide if this is the book for you.

Psychiatry, therapy counseling, and life coaching are distinct yet often confused approaches to personal development and mental well-being. Navigating such distinctions among these terms and services can feel confusing if not frustrating, but you are not alone in that. To better understand these differences, we must grasp the fundamental definitions of each term. This blog post will provide a breakdown of each type of service (psychiatry, therapy, counseling, and life coaching) to enable you to understand and make informed decisions on your mental health options in Korea.

Foreign Language Mental Health Services

International residents in South Korea may have access to a variety of the following mental health support services in a variety of languages such as English, Russian, Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese. Access varies based on region and language.

Psychiatry (정신 의학)

First, let’s take a look at psychiatry.

Psychiatry Definition

As defined by the American Psychiatric Association, psychiatry is the medical specialty dedicated to diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

Credentials

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who holds an M.D. or D.O. degree with a focus on psychiatry.

Purpose and Approaches

A psychiatrist’s primary purpose is to diagnose, treat, and prevent mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. The approach in psychiatry is mainly medical, utilizing medications to address mental health issues.

NOTE: Psychiatrists are the only mental health specialists among the four we will discuss in this blog post who are allowed to prescribe medications.

Treatment Duration

Treatment duration varies based on the nature and severity of the condition, with long-term options for chronic cases. Initial sessions last 30-60 minutes, followed by shorter 15-30 minute follow-up sessions.

Insurance Coverage

Psychiatry services are partially covered by NHIS in Korea. Medication prescriptions are a common aspect of treatment. For more information on NHIS coverage for psychiatry services, call the NHIS English hotline.

NHIS Hotline

NHIS Hotline5

Copy and paste phone numbers into Naver Maps to get directions

This phone number takes you to an NHIS agent who can answer any and all questions you have about the Korean national health insurance including cost and coverage. English, Russian, Chinese and other language services are available. Note: It may be difficult for a call to go through during the lunch hour (12pm-1pm)

(Listing information provided by the South of Seoul app)

To learn more about overall Psychiatry, read here.

Psychotherapy Therapy (심리 치료)

Next, let’s learn about psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy Definition

According to the American Psychological Association (APA), psychotherapy is any psychological service provided by a trained professional primarily utilizing communication and interaction to assess, diagnose, and address dysfunctional emotional reactions, thought patterns, and behavior. Many individuals refer to psychotherapy, generally, as therapy or talk therapy.

Credentials

Psychotherapy is typically conducted by professionals with MA or PhD credentials in psychotherapy. Trained and licensed psychotherapists may include clinical psychologists, psychiatrists, counselors, social workers, or psychiatric nurses.

Purpose and Approaches

The purpose of psychotherapy is to address and alleviate psychological distress, dysfunctional patterns, thoughts, and behaviors and to provide a safe space for individuals, couples, or groups to explore and understand their mental health

Psychotherapists employ various therapeutic techniques and forms of communication. Psychotherapy can be offered to individuals, couples, families, or groups.

Psychotherapy is divided into main categories:

  1. psychodynamic psychotherapy
  2. cognitive therapy or behavior therapy
  3. humanistic therapy
  4. integrative psychotherapy

Mental health conditions (e.g. Anxiety, Depression, ADHD, etc.) can be diagnosed by psychotherapists, if the psychotherapy clinic has the required questionnaires and resources. However, neurological or cognitive conditions (e.g. Dementia) are diagnosed by psychiatrists and neurologists.

NOTE: Psychiatrists can work as trained psychotherapists, but psychotherapists cannot work as psychiatrists unless they have medical certification in psychiatry.

For further information read this article by the APA.

Treatment Duration

Psychotherapy sessions can range from short-term to long-term, depending on the goals and severity of the mental health challenge. Session durations average around 50 minutes.

Insurance Coverage

In Korea, the NHIS does not cover psychotherapy sessions. However, some international insurance may cover psychotherapy services. To learn more about your international insurance coverage of psychotherapy sessions, contact your insurance provider and the clinic from which you would like to receive services.

Counseling (상담)

On to learning about counseling.

Counseling Definition

As per the American Counseling Association, counseling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to achieve goals related to mental health, wellness, educational, and career. Additionally, according to the APA, counseling provides professional assistance in coping with personal problems, including emotional, behavioral, vocational, marital, educational, rehabilitation, and life-stage issues (e.g., cultural adjustment or retirement).

Credentials

Professional counselors typically have a Bachelor’s (BA) or Master’s (MA) credentials in psychology.

Purpose and Approaches

The purpose of counseling is to empower individuals, families, and groups to achieve mental health, wellness, educational, and career goals. Counselors offer professional assistance in coping with personal challenges, such as emotional, behavioral, vocational, and life-stage challenges.

Counselors employ techniques such as active listening, guidance, advice, discussion, clarification, and test administration (diagnostics).

Treatment Duration

The duration of counseling can be brief or short-term, depending on specific concerns, with sessions typically scheduled weekly or bi-weekly and lasting around 50 minutes per session on average.

Insurance Coverage

In Korea, the NHIS does not cover counseling sessions. However, international insurance may cover counseling services.

Life-Coaching Coaching (정신 건강 코칭)

Finally, let’s delve into what life-coaching is.

Life-Coaching Definition

According to the APA dictionary, life coaching is a form of teaching and encouragement, conducted one-to-one or in a group, designed to assist individuals in identifying and achieving goals of importance to them in both personal and work aspects of their lives.

Credentials

Life-coaching practices do not have universally mandated credentials or licenses. However, a life-coach may complete a certification program to practice mentoring.

Purpose and Approaches

The purpose of life-coaching is to assist individuals in identifying and achieving personal and professional goals, with a focus on personal development, motivation, and goal setting.

Approaches for life-coaching often involve one-to-one or group sessions to provide guidance and encouragement, employing techniques such as goal-setting, action planning, positive psychology, and strengths-based coaching.

Treatment Duration

Life-coaching is typically short-term, with a focus on specific goals. Sessions may be less frequent and more goal-oriented.

Insurance Coverage

Life-coaching services are generally not covered by insurance (either NHIS or international insurance options).
