If you haven’t heard about Goseong, Gangwondo, you’ve been missing out. The top right corner of the country sits above the 36th parallel and offers stunning views, beaches, and a rural atmosphere that takes you back in time. It’s one of our favorite parts of Korea.

About Goseong, Gangwon-do

The county of Goseong in Gangwondo borders North Korea above the 36th parallel. Due to its previously difficult-to-access location, the area has not developed as quickly as other parts of the country. Therefore, Goseong exists as a hidden gem nestled within the breathtaking landscapes of Northwestern South Korea. You can see its location in the following map.

Now that we have put Goseong into context, let’s explore the wonders of the area so that you can more easily plan your next trip.

Sustainable Forests

Goseong’s forests feel like some of the richest and most bio-diverse in Gangwondo. Their proximity to the DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) means that they are filled with wildlife and left remarkably untouched. The majestic pine, maple, and oak trees dominate the landscape, creating a symphony of colors that dance in harmony with any breeze that comes along. Every step taken amidst this natural forest paradise reveals new layers of beauty, as sun rays pierce through the leaves, sprinkling golden light upon the forest floor. In short, Goseong’s epic forests make it the place to let your mind rest.

Camping in Goseong in the Fall

Gangwon Forestry Exhibition

In fact, in 2023 South Korea made Goseong the center for the Gangwon Forestry Exhibition. The exhibition lasts for a month between late September and late October. The event is dedicated to sharing information about sustainable forestry and promoting the natural beauty of Gangwondo. Learn more about the Gangwon Forestry Exhibition here.

A variety of the primary events for the Ganwon Forestry Exhibition are held at the Goseong exhibition area and sports park. Many other events may also be held there throughout the year. It’s a stunning space that can easily be converted for different events.

A Tapestry of Fall Colors

Because of the forests in Goseong, the arrival of fall is nothing short of stunning. As the seasons transition, the landscape of this mountain and coastal county becomes a mesmerizing tapestry of vibrant hues. The dense forests, predominantly of pine interspersed with maple and oak trees, don a radiant cloak of greens, reds, oranges, and golds. The juxtaposition of these fiery autumnal shades against the serene backdrop of the East Sea is a sight to behold. Every year, nature enthusiasts and photographers feel drawn to Goseong, not just for its pristine beauty but for this ephemeral display of fall foliage that promises a unique blend of coastal and woodland panoramas.

Hiking in Goseong

Many consider Goseong a hiker’s sanctuary, offering trails that unravel through the area’s pristine forests. If you visit the hiking paths in the fall, a canopy of reds, oranges, and gold envelops you. The scent of pine and crisp air invigorates the senses. From tranquil forest trails dotted with historic temples to routes that offer breathtaking vistas of the East Sea, Goseong’s diverse terrains cater to both novice walkers and seasoned trekkers, promising an unforgettable journey with every step.

Hiking Safety Tips for Goseong

Keep in mind that hiking in Goseong also has additional safety considerations. Due to its location, the country has some issues that may not be as common in other parts of Korea. When planning a hiking trip in Goseong remember it has:

  • Varied Terrains: Some trails can be steep and rugged, requiring adequate preparation and suitable hiking gear.
  • Weather Changes: Given its coastal location, Goseong can experience sudden weather shifts. Fog might roll in swiftly, reducing visibility, or unexpected rainfall can make trails slippery.
  • Wildlife Encounters: While encounters with dangerous wildlife are rare, it’s always possible to come across animals. It’s essential to know how to react and to avoid feeding or disturbing them.
  • Proximity to North Korea: Being close to the North Korean border, there might be restricted areas. Accidentally straying into such areas can lead to serious consequences.
  • Isolation: Some trails might be less frequented, leading to isolated stretches. It’s always recommended to inform someone about your hiking plans or to hike with a companion.
  • Limited Cellular Reception: In certain remote areas, your mobile phone might not get reception, making it challenging to call for help if needed.
  • Dehydration and Fatigue: Stores and marts are more limited in Goseong. Always carry sufficient water and know the signs of exhaustion or heat-related illnesses.

We recommend always hiking with a partner in this part of Korea. In addition, always keep friends posted with your trail plans and coordinate check-in times. Finally, this is a very different hiking experience than the busy trails in other parts of the country.

Biking

You can also enjoy stunning bike rides in Goseong. So, pack up your bikes to enjoy the roads and trails. Here is a small bike course for a weekend adventure.

Seascapes and Sunrises

Goseong isn’t just about forests it also has stunning beaches. The area boasts breathtaking views of the East Sea with many long and expansive swimming beaches. Imagine autumnal mountains juxtaposed against serene seaside sunrises. We have been swimming there late into September.

Car Camping in Taean https://blog.southofseoul.net/car-camping-in-taean/ Fri, 03 Sep 2021 04:10:05 +0000 https://blog.southofseoul.net/?p=5945 Lanae Rivers-Woods, MAIT

Camping in rural South Korea is the perfect summer activity. Here are 11 places in Taean-gun that will wash away the city stress.

Who loves to go car camping? Taean has options you will love. Pack up the car and head to the countryside.

Car Camping Facilities in Korea

Camping in Korea may look different from camping where you come from. For example, I grew up survivalist camping which is the complete opposite of the camping here. In Korea campsites ma:

  • Public showers (a giant open room with showerheads all around) that may only be open during the summer season. That means it closed at the end of August.
  • Trough sinks for washing up dishes (put food waste in the food waste bags and not the sinks)
  • Public bathrooms that are open year-round
  • Plenty of parking
  • Sites with electricity run to them so that you can bring your TV, fan, etc.
  • Areas for BBQ-ing. The BBQ situation is different with each site.

How Much is Car Camping in Korea?

There is no standard price for car camping sites in Korea but they often start at 20,000 -80,000 a night and then go up from there. Here are the different items that may impact the cost of your stay:

  • Will you camp only for the day or will you stay overnight? Many people in Korea choose to camp only for the day. At 5pm, many people will pack up everything and return home.
  • How many tents do you have and how big are the tents? They don’t really charge by individual camping space, they charge by the number of things you are putting up on that space. You can’t all share one camping space to save money and if you put up a massive tent you will likely be charged more than a small tent.
  • You may also be charged differently if you came by scooter, bike, or car.
  • You may be charged different prices during different seasons. Some spots only charge in the summer months and in the winter it’s all free but there are no showers.
  • The fanciness of the campsite. Some campsites are quite rustic and others have more highly developed facilities.

Is “Wild” Camping Legal in Korea?

Wild camping describes camping where there are no official campsites. There are places where this is done. You will often see people camping in non-camping areas. Is it allowed? Maybe and maybe not. In Korea, there is a lot of social grace given to folks. Sometimes folks are just ignoring laws because nobody really cares about those laws.

We recommend checking with 1330 before going wild camping to make sure that it’s acceptable. There are areas of the country where you absolutely can’t do it (think National Parks) and you can get arrested and other areas where laws allow wild camping. However, don’t assume that camping is legal in a spot simply because others are doing it.

Reserving Campsites in South Korea

Some campsites require reservations and others are first come first serve. If you want to know if you need a reservation for a particular campsite you can contact 1330. If you need help making a campsite reservation in Korea you can use a bilingual concierge service.

Campsites that are first come first service also usually require a cash payment so be sure to arrive with at least 80,000 won in cash. This should make sure you have what you need for any incidentals as well.

Car Camping Culture in Korea

Car camping will bring you into a very different cultural space that you may experience in other parts of your life in Korea. Here are some things to know before you go.

  • Personal space: Showers are a communal space. The kitchen sinks are a communal space. You may feel nervous or insecure but that may fade once you become accustomed to the situation.
  • Community space: You may find that people will walk right through your campsite instead of walking around it. This is not uncommon. This can be hard for western folks who have different concepts of public and private space. Your idea of what is an assumed personal space boundary may be challenged.
  • Noise: You will find that folks raise a ruckus until about 10pm. Then it will likely get quiet. Folks are not afraid to be a hot mess until around 10 pm. However, by 11pm or 12pm, you need to be wrapping it up.
  • Trash: You need to use the local trash bags and not the ones you bring from home. Usually, your camping fee pays for those bags. If you are camping off-season you need to grab those local bags from a mart or take your trash home with you to toss.
  • The whole house… but a tent: Many car camping experts in Korea will bring just about everything you can think of. There are video games, TV sets, fans, and giant tents with multiple rooms. It’s amazing and I am in awe.
  • No fires or cooking on the beach: Keep that at your campsite or in approved areas.
  • Wear your masks: During social distancing, you need to wear your masks even if you see others not really complying. There are rebels everywhere, that includes Korea at camping sites. Don’t be a rebel, wear your mask.
  • Summers are hectic: Expect to pack into the camping spots during June and July.
  • Hammocks: Some camping sites allow them and others don’t. You will have to check to see what is ok.

We absolutely LOVE the car camping culture in Korea. Our boundaries have shifted and we now camp BECAUSE of all the people around us enjoying life and relaxing together. Before COVID, we used to find camping a great way to meet new people. Now folks keep to themselves more as we wait for everything to normalize.

Looking for tents, camping kitchens, and so much more? Here are some great places to try in Pyeongtaek.

Camping in Korea

Korea loves camping. More specifically, Korea loves boujee camping. Folks will pull up with tents bigger than my first apartment and set up a whole home just for a day at the beach. They don’t even camp all night. As someone who grew up off-grid in hunt camps and rural cabins in Alaska, I never imagined camping could be quite like this and I am totally here for it.

Shopping for Camping Gear

You can get cheap camping gear at Emart, Homeplus, and Lotte Mart. To be honest, this is where my cheap-ass picks up most of our camping supplies. We got a summer sleeping back for 3,000 won on summer clearance. We found fishing chairs for 4,000 won each. We are completely redneck fabulous every time we go to the beach.

However, if you want to be fancy. I recommend visiting one of these fine camping supply stores. You will find things you never even imagined. Sometimes it looks like Instagram started designing camping supplies. If I wasn’t so cheap, I would buy it all.

5 Camping Supplies Stores to Visit in Pyeongtaek

These camping supplies stores aren’t for folks who climb Denali, they are folks who want to feel fancy camping in their car for the weekend. These aren’t going to be massive like the US camping stores I have seen on the internet. However, they have everything you really need for a fun weekend away.
